An 11th win of the year meant
Lewis Hamilton left the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with his second F1 drivers’
championship of his career.
His first championship came in 2008
in Brazil, but said that this one “means more than the first” and Prince Harry
was quick to congratulate the driver after the race over the team radio, as
Hamilton drove round the track waving the Union flag. Hamilton said after the
race that he was “lost for words” and that winning the championship is “the
greatest feeling ever.”
It was Nico Rosberg, his Mercedes
team mate and title rival who was pole position on the grid but Hamilton
started the race fantastically, pulling away from the crowd of cars and into
the lead where he spent most of the race.
Rosberg did have chance at claiming
the drivers’ championship due to double points if Hamilton finished third place
or below but technical failures with his cars power unit meant he couldn’t battle
with Hamilton as he hoped he would. The technical issues looked as if they would
force him to retire late on in the race but he stayed on the track, eventually
finishing the race 14th.
He wasn’t bitter with disappointment
though, congratulating Hamilton and saying “he deserved to win today and to win
the championship.” He also said that Hamilton was “the best driver on the grid
this year.”
History was looking to repeat itself
with Felipe Massa looking to finish first place and Hamilton winning the championship,
something we saw at the Brazil 2008 grand prix but Hamilton reclaimed first
place and after the issues with Rosberg’s car was able to drive confidently,
setting three fastest lap times as he closed in on his championship victory and
Mercedes’ 16th win of the season.
Massa did finish on the podium in
second, with Valtteri Bottas claiming third place. Massa said “congratulations”
to Hamilton and “you deserve it.”
The race could have seen fellow
Brit and 2009 Formula One champion, Jenson Button race his race in Formula One
as he is unsure about his future in the sport.
Hamilton will now be in talks with
Mercedes about his contract and after his win, can only be good for Hamilton.
He will look to start off next season as brightly as he finished this one, with
the first race being held in Melbourne.
