Australia 16 – 12 England | AAMI Park | ThatCoultasGuy
In a match where the Video Referee called many decisions correctly, the most important decision of the
night was wrong, leaving a nation heartbroken.Leeds Rhinos player Ryan Hall looked to have stolen it for England with virtually the last attack of the game when he was shown to have had his little finger on the ball as it was in the try zone, but Australian referee Gerard Sutton took it to video referee, Bernard Sutton who deemed it No Try and England were left shattered.
Hall said “[he] knew [he] got something on it” but later went on to say he “didn’t want to make a big fuss about it” as he wanted England to have the ball after the incident
to try and capture some vital points.
The video replay showed Hall to have scored the apparent try and thousands of English fans felt this way, but Bernard Sutton clearly didn’t.
England captain Sean O’Loughlin thought his team had “scraped it at the end”. He said his side “put in a good performance” but it was clearly not good enough.
Australia opened their account after 15 minutes when Greg Bird broke away before passing to Michael Jennings to score try, only after it was confirmed by the Video Ref. England pulled it back and at half time they went in 12-4 up.
The second half was a different picture as McNamara’s men dropped off and didn’t manage to score a single point, something they will have to change before their clash with New Zealand. Hall said that “[in the] first half [they] were good, second half [they] went back into [their] shell a little bit”.
Ben Hunt led the Kangaroos’ comeback with a try on his debut, before Greg Inglis put Australia ahead, with Cameron Smith kicking both conversions.
Steve McNamara claimed this loss as “tough to take” but said his team will “be going hard at New Zealand” on Saturday where England will need to win by 10 points to advance to the final.
