After the putting a lot of hours
into the Umbro Special 2009, it’s finally time for my verdict on them.
We start
with the upper. The soft k-leather upper is truly fantastic out of
the box and after putting a few hours into it (I've been using these for around
10 hours now) is even better. It moulds to the shape of your foot, as any good
leather boot should, and really feel like it’s been made specifically for your
foot.
It is a
white upper so the stitching does get dirty and stained the first time you wear
them but this is to be expected but the leather upper does white clean and a
bit of leather cream makes it look good as new (aside from the
stitching).
The fold-over tongue does
make this heritage boot look even more classic than some of the more modern
'classic' boots we see today.
The
soleplate with its classic 6 stud pattern performs really well on wet and muddy
pitches.
Pitches in England are notorious for being mud baths and the Speciali handles them really well. Being the class 6 stud SG pattern means it’s a no-nonsense experience on these types of pitches.

The insole is a very comfortable one
consisting of a thick black foam and Poron inserts in the heel and forefoot. It
had a liner on it which is synthetic leather which grips your sock well and doesn't allow for any slippage.
The boot fits fantastically and
true to size. I was worried that the leather would over stretch and become a
sloppy fit but the stitching on the upper holds the leather well and doesn't allow
it to do this.
The only things I would change
about this boot is the tongue. Instead of having it held down with Velcro, I would
have liked to have seen an elastic strap on it, like we saw on the classic
Adidas Predator tongues.
I would also have removed the
large flap on the back of the boot as I feel it looks a bit odd, but this is something
you could do with a pair of scissors.
So overall, a great pair of boots
which I think could still battle it out with some of today heritage/classic
boots due to the great fit and performance they offer.
