George Milton Feature | ThatCoultasGuy

Human Physiology or King Kev? It’s not a question most people would have to consider, but for George Milton it’s one he has to think about very seriously.

A childhood leading up to the moment which most young athletes will have to make. Something which will affect their lives and careers. For Milton, wanting to achieve the heights of his hero and Leeds Rhinos player Kevin Sinfield is something he sets his sights on.

Currently in the Under 19s Academy for Leeds Rhinos, He’s in a fantastic place to achieve his dream. Being in the academy set up since the age of 16, Milton who’s now 19 has to juggle many things going on in his life: A relationship, training, family life and also college. Out of all these factors, the two he finds difficult to balance is the task of revising for his A-Levels and playing for the Leeds Rhinos Academy for his age group.

This is his second time sitting his A-levels after finding it difficult the first time. “The second time round after learning lessons and having more discipline I have found it much easier.”

He says that this is due to now knowing what he wants to achieve from both the glamorous life of rugby and the necessity of studying and which to prioritise at that certain time.
Signing his first pro contract at the age of 16 will have made the question of University or focusing on rugby and trying to break into the first team a whole lot more complicated. This is the age most teenagers are out with friends. Juggling going to parties and staying at home playing video games all day. For Milton, this was around age he started to train with the academy and even represented his country against France.

Settling in was no problem for the Leeds boy with the only difficulty being getting to know his teammates who were in the same boat as him. He also loved the physical aspect to it. “The extra physical demands such as becoming fitter and stronger is something expected when you turn pro. Overall I would say it was easy settling in.”

But he also knows that he will have to focus on University at one stage in his life, something everyone wants to do is be successful at what they love. Milton has two things which he is fascinated with, Rugby and Human Physiology.  It’s his dream to play at the highest level, but what if it doesn’t work out for him?

“With regards to the university degree, I do believe that it is important for me to get a higher level of education as it would be something there to fall back on if rugby ultimately didn't work out for whatever reason.”

A sensible head on the broad, muscular shoulders of this prop. He does admit though that his passion is rugby. “I believe that to make at the highest level in sport you need to be fully committed and have no distractions, so I think that holding off on a degree till I have established myself at a club in the first team would benefit me. I do think having a degree is a great option and essential for me in the long term but I don't think it is the better option for me at this moment in time, I think I may do a degree at a later stage in my life.”

Whatever route he chooses in the end, there will surely be success for this young athlete. Whether it be battling the opposition side, or tackling the science of the human body.
